Cuando una joven y misteriosa mujer llamada Katie (Julianne Hough) aparece en el pequeño pueblo de Southport, Carolina del Norte, arrastra consigo un tormentoso pasado. Al parecer, tuvo un par de relaciones complicadas que todavía le hacen ser tímida y reservada. Pero poco a poco baja la guardia y empieza a sentirse parte de la comunidad. Sobre todo se siente unida al viudo Alex (Josh Duhamel) y a su familia. Pero cuando Katie se enamora definitivamente de Alex, el terrible secreto que permanecía oculto en su corazón sale a la luz de forma imprevisible y dramática.
