La historia gira en torno el célebre astrofísico Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) y su primera mujer Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones), cuando en los años sesenta un joven y prometedor científico recibe un diagnóstico estremecedor a los 21 años, sufre esclerosis lateral amiotrófica, más conocida como ELA. El científico junto a su esposa luchando incansablemente, desafía todas las probabilidades, abriendo nuevos caminos en la medicina y la ciencia. 'La teoría del todo' es una adaptación de las memorias de Jane Hawking, 'Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen'.
