Andrew Neyman (Miles Teller) es un joven baterista de jazz, cuyo objetivo es triunfar en el elitista Conservatorio de Música de la Costa Este en el que estudia. Marcado por el fracaso de la carrera literaria de su padre, Andrew busca día y noche convertirse en uno de los grandes. Terence Fletcher, (J.K. Simmons), un profesor conocido por su talento para la enseñanza como por sus terribles métodos, dirige el mejor conjunto de jazz del Conservatorio. Fletcher descubre a Andrew y lo incluyeen el conjunto musical que dirige, hecho que marcará para siempre sus vidas.
